(Lower) Hurst Street

Crossing the junction over Sherlock Street into the bottommost section of Hurst Street, once known as Lower or Little Hurst Street. The map from the 1950s shows us that this “lower” end of Hurst Street was lined with small premises, probably once houses, huddled around a welding factory.

These have been swept away on the left hand side and the building on the corner is The Second City Suite, a modern wedding, conference and events venue. This building occupies all of that side of Hurst Street continuing down to the junction of Bishop Street, thus concluding our walk along that side of Hurst Street.

The Second City Suite’s publicity material tells us that:

“The newly refurbished Second City Suite has opened up its doors providing the City centre with a first class banqueting and conferencing venue, it has built up an excellent reputation over the past fourteen years as the ideal choice for any type of function.

“Recently relocated to a newly refurbished building in Birmingham’s popular Chinatown district, the new Second City Suite offers a versatile environment available for almost any use; wedding receptions, parties, banquets, gala events, shows, or more business oriented needs such as conferences, seminars, exhibitions.”

We then take a look at Bishop Street before heading back up Hurst Street.
