Ladywell Walk – South Side

As we cross over Ladywell Walk (there are sets of conveniently located pedestrian crossings here) we will find that we are alongside the ARCADIAN development that fills most of the block bounded by Ladywell Walk, Pershore Street, Bromsgrove Street and Hurst Street.

“Down through the “Green” the way led to Lady Well Walk, where more gardens lay, and the well was wide, clear and deep.” A description by George Holyoake of Ladywell Walk and the Well, in the 1820’s

In that time the pathway lead to the Lady Well. This well was the main source of water for the residents of Hurst Street and the immediate surrounding areas. It was fed from the underground springs, which were abundant in the area providing clear pure drinking water.

Dominating this side of the street is the IBIS Hotel which covers the site of the Lady Well and the timber yard that replaced it. The exact location of the Lady Well was indicated by a brass plaque in the foyer of the Ibis Hotel, but during a recent refurbishment the plaque was removed and has not been reinstated. To find out more about the Lady Well and the baths, see the next two pages.

So now we make our way back to Hurst Street.

When we arrive at the top of Ladywell Walk we arrive at what is now known as Hippodrome Square.
